The mission of Belgorod State University (BelSU) is to solve research problems of international and national significance, to integrate the educational, research, social and cultural functions of the University in order to train highly qualified professionals capable of ensuring the competitiveness of Russia and Belgorod region on the global socioeconomic arena, as well as to preserve and develop the cultural and moral heritage of the country and the region.

UN Club is the student association dealing with the projects related to international political organisations. The main goal is to conduct Belgorod UN International Model.
In 2009 BelSU became Foundation University of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Nanotechnology.
In 2010 Belgorod State University was granted “National Research University” status.
In 2012 Belgorod State University ranked 30th among 103 Russian state universities and about 500 branches that participated in the ratings.
In June 2012 the University rose to 13th (from 51st in 2011) in the ranking of the 60 academic institutions which participated in the Federal Bursary Program of the Vladimir Potanin Charity Fund.
In 2013 ten new scientific laboratories were instituted. Some of them were founded under the auspices of the Russian Academy of Sciences with Associates and Members’ participation or leadership.
In 2013, the 6th Hall of Residence for 1000 people was completed.
In 2014 BelSU entered the BRICS Universities Ranking in partnership with the QS Top-200 (at 151st).
In 2015 BelSU entered the rating of the 150 best universities of Europe and Central Asia. The rating is assessed by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) (141st -150th).
In a rating of Spanish Cybermetrics Company (Webometrics Ranking of World Universities) BelSU is one of the best 2000 universities in the World: 1757th position among 15,000 international and 18th position among 1531 Russian universities and scientific organizations.
In 2015 according to the results from the efficiency monitoring of universities in 2015, BelSU achieved top 20 status among Russian universities.
In 2016 BelSU ranked 19th among the best Russian higher education institutions according to the International Interfax Group. In 2021 the University retained the same position.
In 2017 BelSU entered the “Top 100” of one of the main world rankings – the Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects and took 76th -100th position in the “Metallurgy” category of the “Physical Sciences” section. For the last 5 years it has retained the same position.
In 2017 BelSU created a fourth scientific discipline in humanities called “Person, Society and Science: challenges and prospects for development”.
In 2017 BelSU was included in a consortium of exporters of higher education institutions from Russia with the purpose of providing an innovative Russian platform for increasing growth in rates of exporting education.
In 2017 BelSU was included in the list of the 19 higher education institutions and four scientific organizations which are given the right to independently award candidate and doctor of science academic degrees, create dissertation councils and establish their credentials.
In 2017 by Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation of December 11, 2017 No. 1206 “About Federal Innovative Platforms” (FIP), BelSU was included in the list of FIP due to a project entitled “The formation of a new quality of staff training under conditions involving the implementation of the university’s development strategy as a centre of innovative, technological and social development in the region”.
In 2018 BelSU joined WorldSkills Russia movement and became an associated partner of “Young Professionals (WroldSkills Russia)” Union.
In 2018 BelSU became a co-founder of the Hanseatic League of Universities, which included 13 universities from different parts of the world: BelSU (Russia), Hanse University of Applied Sciences in Groningen (the Netherlands), Tampere University of Applied Sciences (Finland), University College of Leuven-Limburg (Belgium), Beijing University of Technology and Business (China), Incheon National University (Republic of Korea), Northern Arizona University (USA), Uganda Christian University (Uganda), University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), University of Applied Sciences Bremen (Germany), Deggendorf Higher Technical School (Germany), Florida Gulf Coast University (USA), Vietnam National University of Agriculture (Vietnam).
In additional INTERFAX ranking BelSU took the 14th position in the field of “CPE Organization”.
In 2019 Belgorod State University entered the Times Higher Education World University Ranking placed 801st-1000th, it took the 601st-800th position in the subject ranking in Physical sciences, as well as position 301+ in the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings.
According to RAEX (Expert RA rating agency) rating, Belgorod State University was recognized as the best university considering the rate of its overall advance for the last six years. BelSU took the 47th place, rising from 72nd position, which it took in 2015.

According to the SCimago Institutions Rankings Global Higher Education Belgorod State University ranked 768th in the world and 34th in the Russian Federation.
In the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities BelSU took 1844th position among all the universities and academic organizations all over the world and 22nd position among the Russian Federation universities.
According to the Subject ranking of academic productivity of the Russian universities set up by analytical centre EXPERT University Ranking BelSU took 13th -14th position in the category “Materials Science”, 4th-5th in a statistical sample “Metallurgy”, 11th-13th in the category “Engineering”, 19th-21th in the category “Humanities”. 29th in the category of “Social Science” and 29th in the statistic sample “Biological Chemistry” of “Biosciences” subject category.
In the analytical centre EXPERT inventive activities ranking BelSU entered the group 23-26.
BelSU became a Foundation University of World-Class Scientific and Educational Center “Innovative Solutions in the Agro-Industrial Complex”
Ambassador Institution was formed at the basis of the BelSU. The pioneer ambassadors were BelSU graduates from China and Ecuador.
In 2020, Belgorod State University for the fourth time retained its positions among 100 best universities in the world in the field of “Metallurgical Engineering” (76th out of 100) according to the Shanghai Ranking (ARWU).

In the rating of Russian universities of the RAEX rating agency “Expert RA”, BelSU took 40th place out of 100 best universities of the Russian Federation.
BelSU ranked 401st-600th out of 767 participants in the Ranking of the Impact of Universities on the Sustainable Social and Economic Development of Society by the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings.
BelSU took the 167th place (35th place in Russia) in the TOP-200 of the best universities in the countries with developing economies in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
According to the Moscow International University Ranking “Three University Missions” (MosIUR), BelSU entered the 901st-1000th group (34-41st group in the Russian Federation).
BelSU is the only higher educational institution in Russia that was included in the first international ranking “World Universities with Real Impact - WURI”, created within the framework of the Hanseatic League of Universities, in the establishment of which BelSU took part.
In the first edition of the ranking in the field of “Industrial Application”, the university took 24th place out of 143 participants, and in the TOP-100 of the overall rating “Innovative universities” - 82nd place out of 264 participating universities.
BelSU entered the premier league of the national aggregate rating of Russian universities, set up by the Guild of Experts in the Field of Professional Education, taking 20th place.
In the rating “Index of inventive activity of Russian universities”-2020, set up by the analytical center “Expert”, BelSU is in 10-11th place (in total, the rating includes 84 best Russian universities).
The University entered the TOP-10 of the first national rating of “eco-friendly” universities in Russia, taking 9th place.
There was signed an agreement on the establishment of a joint institute “Belgorod Institute of Food Sciences and Engineering at Dezhou University” between Dezhou University (Dezhou, China) and BelSU.
The project “Capacity building through social innovations in the field of improving and maintaining health and well-being in communities” (SUSWELL), implemented by a consortium of universities from the Netherlands, Finland, Germany, Portugal, Belgium, Kosovo and Russia with the participation of BelSU, received financial support from the program European Union “Erasmus +” worth almost 1 million euros.
The project “Improving the internal assessment of the education quality in the field of teaching and learning in Azerbaijan and Russia Universities” (IQAinAR), implemented by a consortium of universities from the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Azerbaijan, and Russia with the participation of BelSU, received financial support from the European Union program “Erasmus+” in the amount of almost 700 thousand euros.
4 graduates of BelSU are university ambassadors in China, Ecuador, Uzbekistan and Angola.
In 2021, BelSU successfully passed the state accreditation and received a Certificate of Accreditation for the next six years.
Included in a top World University Ranking of the British company QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), ranked in the group 1001-1200. The highest indicators in terms of a number of foreign students (303rd in the world) and reputation estimates based on professors and employers’ reviews (group 501+). Ranked 524 in the world in terms of “teacher-student” correlation and 601+ in terms of a number of foreign teachers and citation index for 1 academic and research work.
The university was included in the top league of the National Aggregated Rating ranked 14 among 687 universities in Russia basing on five subjects: Mathematics and Mechanics; Material Technologies; Economics and Management; Mass Media and Library Science; Education and Pedagogical Sciences.
The BelSU staff won an Organization of high social efficiency award in the annual competition for the best organization of the Belgorod region.
For the second time in a row, the university won a prestigious Russian competition “Project Olympus”, being rewarded in the nomination for lean management with the project “Creating the MPSC for students”.
BelSU performed as a platform for the Federal Internet Exam for Undergraduates (FIEU). According to the results of the FIEU, it was ranked 14th in the “Assessment of the quality of training” rating.
BelSU ranked 590th out of 4156 universities in the world, 37th out of 155 universities in Russia according to the international world ranking of scientific institutions SCimago.
The university was ranked 70th in the rating of innovative universities based on their impact on the socio-economic development of the regions.
According to the results of the recertification audit of the QMS conducted by the Russian Register Certification Association, the university was granted a certificate conforming quality management system of BelSU to the requirements of the international standard ISO 9001:2015, valid until 2024.
