An open seminar was conducted at the Institute of Medicine for 5th year students on the subject of avoiding, and treating medical emergencies in the Dental Surgery.
Dr Anton Makarov, a leading thoracic surgeon, talked about techniques for providing emergency care and gave recommendations on the prevention of complications associated with anaesthesia in dentistry.
The event also acted as accreditation training for qualified dentists and residents, as well as providing information for 5th year dental students. Among the current issues raised were statistical data collected on medical complications arising as a result of dental treatment, and the types of drugs used when treating pregnant women, the elderly and people with complex medical needs. Dr Makarov explained,
“Statistics show that every year allergies are increasingly prevalent. Emergency conditions can arise in any dental practice. Therefore, it is necessary to have knowledge of incubation periods, risk factors, differential diagnosis and treatment options.”
Dr Makarov then demonstrated resuscitation and emergency procedures on a medical dummy.
