Professor Natalia Besedina, Head of the Pedagogical Institute's Department of English and Teaching Methodology, led a team attending the 8th International Congress on Cognitive Linguistics in Moscow
Last year, the congress was held at BNRU. This year it is taking place at Moscow State University, and next year it is scheduled for Nizhny Novgorod. Typically, the meeting attracts more than 300 participants from across Russia and around the world. This year saw representation from 13 countries. Over 3 days, experts congregate to discuss aspects of linguistics that include understanding the role of man in his processing of reality and the typology of human knowledge, with a view to making a contribution to improving metalanguage apparatus and methodology. In total, there are 4 plenary sessions and 15 associated forums. The theme for the Congress was 'Language as a Reflection of Man, as Against Man as a reflection of Language'.
Professor Besedina, Dr Svetlana Stepanenko, and Dr Olga Yarygina presented their work on the 'Development of the Pedagogical Institute in Science and Innovation', which was made possible by an intra-university grant. The main thrust of their work centred on the anthropocentric aspect of language in the process of human interpretive activity.
Of course, as well as attending the research presentations, linguists were able to discuss projects with colleagues, and determine ways in which cooperation between individual scientists and their parent institutes might be supported here and abroad.
