500 athletes from 37 countries gathered in Daugavpils in Latvia for the 2018 World Kettlebell Weightlifting Championship, which saw Pavel Chuyev set a world record, and Sergei Lupandin and Ivan Belyaev win their categories
Kettlebell lifting has been a popular sport in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe since the 1960s, and follows the same system of weight and age categorisation as power-lifting. Competitions involve tests of stamina and technique with weights of up to 32Kg designed for single-handed use. Our three gold-medallists are all studying at the Pedagogical Institute's Physical Education Department. Mr Chuyev set a new world record in his 85Kg weight category, by lifting the maximum weight 94 times in a period of 10 minutes. Mr Lupandin won in his 63Kg weight category lifting the maximum weight 57 times in 10 minutes. Mr Belyaev won in his 78Kg weight category lifting the maximum weight 83 times in 10 minutes. Mr Chuyev and Mr Belyaev also won gold for Russia in the team relay.
