BNRU is currently hosting a seminar on 'International Standards of Quality in the Preparation and Publication of Scientific Journals', which aims to give participants a full understanding of the world of academic publishing
The event is sponsored by the Association of Scientific Editors and Publishers (ASEP), the National Consortium of (Academic) Writing Centres (NCWC), and Pensoft, the pioneering Bulgarian academic publishing company. The conference has generated significant interest from researchers, from BNRU and further afield. On the first day, attendees were treated to an illuminating talk by Dr Lilia Raitskaya, an ASEP member and prolific author of academic articles. She took time from her duties at MGIMO University in Moscow to speak about the place of Russia in the global scientific publishing space, and about her work as a reviewer for the 'Journal of Language and Education', and review practices in general. Dr Elena Bazanova, President of the NCWC, then gave a crash course on the finer points of publishing in English in foreign journals, pointing out idiosyncrasies and stylistic themes.
The seminar involved discussions and lectures on all things academic publishing. Among the main topics tackled, of particular interest were discussions on the scientific journal publication process, the problems around the observance of scientific ethics by Russian journals (so-called 'Junk Journals'), and creating a system of publishing in Russia that will rival the best in the world.
