Belgorod State University staff, Dr Alexander Galtsev and Dr Irina Shumakova, were part of the Russian Federation's student admissions team processing applications in Beirut and Damascus
The admissions team is made up of 15 leading Russian universities offering courses that cover the spectrum of subjects available to undergraduates. Our government has ruled that Russian higher educational institutes must take more students from people displaced or effected by the Syrian crisis. The government was responding to an increased demand from Syrians for study opportunities in Russia, and it is hoped that graduates from our universities will help rebuild the country. Dr Galtsev elaborated,
“The team noted a significant increase in the number of people wishing to get their higher education in Russia, and the quality of applicants. The increased demand was a response to a series of exhibition events about study opportunities in Russia organised by Rossotrudnichestvo across the Middle East, which included Lebanon.”
Of the 636 Lebanese applications, 192 people were tested, and 68 were accepted for study programs in Russia. In Syria, around 1000 people were tested, and 500 won scholarships from the Russian Federation.
Academics will continue to tour the Middle East in the near future, but took time to meet with the Rectors of Syrian Universities with a view to future academic cooperation.
