Svetlana Savvina, a Master's student at Belgorod State University's Faculty of History and Philology, went to teach Russian language and culture at the Hoang Van Thu School for Gifted Students in Hòa Bình, a small city 75km south west of Hanoi
Rossotrudnichestvo, the Russian Federation's organisation for promoting Russian culture abroad, ran a competition called 'Masters of the Russian Language'. The aim was to find talented young people who could represent Russian culture and language abroad. As a winner in 2018, Ms Savvina spent an academic year teaching in Vietnam, and returned in April. She had many duties while she was there. Besides her teaching commitments, she had to find time to organise festivities for local children that mirrored the major holidays and occasions celebrated here in Russia. She had a rewarding experience, and commented that she gained a respect for her students and colleagues, which was evidently reciprocated, as she received an award from her hosts for her efforts. She was impressed by the enthusiasm shown by her students, who were keen on Russian history in particular.
