Dr Olesya Khoreva took a group of students from Belgorod State University's Pedagogical Institute to Cyprus for a journey into the ancient history and culture of this Mediterranean island, courtesy of the Gnosis Scientific Coordination Centre
The program was called 'Antiquity and the Middle Ages in the Cultural and Historical Heritage of Cyprus', and links directly to the work of the University's International Centre for Historical Research into Problems of Neighbourhood and Identity. The participants first visited the Neolithic settlement of Khirokitia, a UNESCO site occupied from the 7th to the 4th century BCE. Then it was on to Kourion, a 12th century BCE Mycenaean city state. Next came a trip to the Archaeological Museum in Nicosia, followed by a visit to Lefkara, a village of traditional craftsmen, where they were introduced to local folk crafts. The trip concluded with a visit to a Byzantine monastery in the Troodos mountain range.
Future cooperation will revolve around archaeological excavations conducted by our students and staff in conjunction with local Cypriot organisations.
