Belgorod State University has won a grant and prizes amounting to €3.2m (₽228m) in a competition run over the last six years, to find projects that will support the future growth of the Russian economy
Our material scientists performed consistently brilliantly in the competition, run by the Ministry for Education and Science, placing second out of 177 participants. Dr Damir Tagirov, who leads the Processing Equipment Common Use Centre at the University, said that the money would be ploughed into buying cutting-edge machinery which will facilitate their quest to create modern alloys that reduce friction to near zero in metal machinery. This will place our University among the leaders in material science, globally. Professor Sergei Zherebtsov, who is responsible for scientific research, said that the new machinery will bring us up to having 80% of our equipment younger than five years-old. He emphasised that the equipment will not only enhance our capacity in materials science, but will benefit a broad area of research within the University, perhaps uncovering some unexplored avenues of future benefit to our collective economic development.
