Evgeny Savchenko chaired a meeting as part of the federally mandated Regional Research Centre. He has called for a focus on the dairy industry in the Region, with emphasis on breeding, genetics, animal welfare, and veterinary services
Belgorod Region is a centre for Russian food production, and is a focus of the Federal Government's drive to modernise the economy. The Governor is taking an active role in coordinating the effort through our University, which is the hub for the project. The meeting involved movers and shakers from industry and the government, and senior academics. Our central role in this is evidenced by our involvement in 9 out of the 14 projects currently under way.
The meeting convened to consider giving a green light to 4 more projects, with the Governor expressing his desire that packaging for all food should be biodegradable, which would be a major step in a green direction. Also postulated by Dr Eduard Snegin, a genetics expert at our University, was a project to develop multiplex panels for genotyping pigs and cattle, that would increase productivity in animal husbandry. This drew wide approval, and the Governor ordered a detailed plan for consideration.
Our status as a hub of this kind of activity draws in talent and expertise, as well as funding. Watch this space!
