The phytochemical compounds hyperforin and adhyperforin will be used in the production of antidepressants, as well as drugs against viruses and Staphylococcus aureus
The project of scientists of the NRU “BelSU” Institute of Pharmacy, Chemistry and Biology is being implemented as part of the REC “Innovative Solutions in the Agricultural Complex”. The new technology, patented by pharmacists, allows using standard laboratory equipment with minimal energy consumption for extracting valuable phytochemical compounds, in particular hyperforin and adhyperforin, which can be found in common St. John's wort. The plant extracts have antidepressant and anxiolytic properties, which help to eliminate emotional stress, anxiety and fear. Studies show that these substances also have anticancer, antiviral and antibacterial properties. Scientists note that hyperforin inhibits the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, which is resistant to most antibiotics.
The project co-author, associate professor of the NRU “BelSU” Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Ph.D. Nikolai Boyko, said that as opposed to the current extraction methods, the new technology is straightforward and cost-effective. The St. John's wort latest extraction technology is also an environmentally friendly process.
