Transgenic animals will be used to study neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis as well as to test medical preparations that help people to cure neurodegenerative diseases
Re-derivation of the unique transgenic mouse line predisposed to neurodegeneration was conducted at the vivarium of BelSU Scientific Research Institute Pharmacology of Living Systems where the SPF animals are housed (rodents that are free of the specific pathogenes). According to Vladislav Soldatov, the teaching assistant of the Division of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology, the mice grown at the Institute of the RAS Gene Biology that are characterized by normal microbiological qualities were transferred to SPF-status.
“We removed fertilized ovum from an ‘impure” transgenic mouse and transplanted them into a reproductive system of a “pure” mouse”, commented Vladislav explaining the re-derivation process that is similar to surrogacy.
“Pure” animals grown at the experimental biological clinics at Belgorod State University will serve as unique objects for neurodegenerative diseases study and medical preparations testing.
On November 30, 2020 BelSU Scientific Research Institute Pharmacology of Living Systems being involved in the work of the World-Class REC “Innovative Solutions in Agri-business” opened the Laboratory of Genome Editing in Biomedicine and Veterinary. According to Mikhail Pokrovskiy, the Head of the Institute, the laboratory facilities will be utilized for human diseases modelling based on the laboratory animals and genetic technologies, developing and evaluating effectiveness of the gene-therapy preparations, growing gene modified animals with improved qualities for agricultural sector.
