The ceremony of laying down a lilac alley, an alley of Spanish pine trees and planting out of a Peter’s the Great oak tree were devoted to the 145th anniversary of Belgorod State University
145 saplings lilacs of Lomonosov variety, 50 Spanish pine trees and an acorn of a historically significant oak tree set by Peter the Great were planted out in the Botanical Garden of BelSU within the regional environmental voluntary work.
Representatives of Belgorod city government, university administration, the REC BelSu Botanical Garden staff and students took part in a meeting to break ground for the alley and bed a sapling of the tree, which is a natural monument of federal importance.
Opening the event, professor Oleg Polukhin Rector of BelSU, noted that the new alleys would appear in the Botanical Garden in the year of the 145th anniversary of the university and the 25th anniversary of granting the status of a classical university. He emphasized that this was only a small input to the development program of the regional territories.
Andrey Mukhartov, Deputy Head of the Belgorod City Administration for Social Policy and Education, noted that the Botanical Garden of Belgorod State University became a part of the State Russian Museum, as a place where Peter’s oak tree sapling had been planted out.
It is worth noting that planted Spanish pine trees and lilacs saplings planted are no less symbolic. The pine represents fortitude, spiritual growth and purification, and this lilac variety is named after the founder of the first university in Russia.
