The research in personalised medicine by Irina Ponomarenko, Professor of the Department of Medical and Biological Disciplines at BelSU Medical Institute, was supported by a grant from the President of the Russian Federation
The research by the professor of Medical and Biological Disciplines aims to identify genetic factors in female reproductive health and personalized disease prevention. It prioritises the development of new personalised approaches to identifying reproductive disease risk groups among all women.
The Perinatal Centre of Belgorod St. Joasaph Clinical Hospital and Belgorod Oncological Dispensary have already formed groups of women with reproductive diseases and pregnancycomplications. The BelSU laboratory isolated DNA from the patients' blood and will work on identifying the genes that cause illnesses.
The research will result in a comprehensive analysis of the genes impact and their interactions in the origin of such diseases as uterine myoma, endometriosis, breast cancer, as well as the search for genetic causes of foetal growth retardation and pre-eclampsia.
In the near future the results achieved by BelSU geneticists will form the basis for developing advanced training programmes for medical professionals and special courses in medical and clinical genetics at universities.
