20 nursery plants of new lilac varieties were added to the collection of Botanical Garden increasing the total number of varieties and species to 462.
Professor Oleg Polukhin, Rector of Belgorod State University, Andrey Mukhartov, the First Deputy Minister of Education of Belgorod region and a graduate of Belgorod State University, as well as the university’s staff, lecturers and students participated in the lilac planting ceremony.
The University has implemented the large-scale “Belgorod Lilacs” project for the fifth year following the ambitious goal of creating the world's largest plant collection in BelSU Botanical Garden.
“The collection of our Botanical Garden has been enriched by four new varieties of Sakharov’s domestic selection and four varieties of foreign selection, so the total number of lilacs rightly called the symbol of victory has reached 462”, said the Rector.
It is symbolic that last year Belgorod State University scientists produced and registered two new varieties of lilacs referring to military topic in Belgorod breeding – “Marshal Katukov” and “Ekaterina Katukova” at the REC “Innovative solutions in Agri-Business” platform.
Andrey Mukhartov, the First Deputy Minister of Education of Belgorod region, expressed his admiration for the university and its achievements.
“I want to be involved in the distinctive work of the university, not only because it is my alma mater, but also as a common citizen. I would like to believe that our efforts will live on for decades”, said Andrey Mukhartov.
