The high strength and ductility novel alloy can be used as a construction material.
The researchers of Belgorod State University developed and patented a new alloy for gas production and cryogenic engineering. They believe that one of the most promising trends in modern materials science is the development of high entropy alloys, materials containing at least five elements taken in equal proportions. This multi-component alloy provides for the properties essential in aerospace industry, oil and gas extraction, construction, and medicine.
According to Nikita Stepanov, a senior researcher at the Laboratory of Bulk Nanostructured Materials at Belgorod State University, the currently available methods applied for producing high-efficiency alloys combining high strength and plasticity assume resource-intensive and multi-stage processing, including high-temperature forging. The scientists of Belgorod State University suggest an alternative technology for producing materials with similar properties.
The targeted properties of the novel alloy were obtained through the developed technology of deformation and heat treatment, which is characterised by simplicity, a small number of operations and low energy consumption due to the short annealing time. The alloy can be utilized in production of cryogenic equipment and gas extraction industry because of its relatively low cost and high mechanical properties.
