A scientist from Belgorod State University took part in the VI nationwide conference “Fortification significant sites: History, Restoration, Use,” held in Arkhangelsk.
The conference was held in the Arkhangelsk Gostiny Dvori Historical and Architectural Complex. Historical issues on the development of domestic and foreign defense architecture were discussed by scientists, curators and restorers from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Astrakhan, Vologda, Kazan, Volgograd, Chelyabinsk, Smolensk, Novosibirsk, Novorossiysk, Sevastopol, and Belgorod. Belgorod State University was represented by Sergey Prokopenko, Associate Professor of the Department of General History.
Sergey Nikolaevich presented the results of his scientific research on the changes in the urban fortifications of late antique Side (a city in modern Turkey), an important economic and political centre of the historical province of Pamphylia and a major urban centre of the Eastern Mediterranean in the Late Antique period. The report aroused a certain interest and discussion about the variants of transformation of the Eastern Gate of the city of the period under consideration.
The researcher thanked the audience for the feedback and valuable recommendations, as well as for an opportunity to discuss the possibilities for collaborative research with colleagues from Arkhangelsk and Vologda.
The conference allowed the participants to thoroughly study the extensive collection of the Arkhangelsk Museum of Local Lore and visit the Novodvinsk Fortress, a unique object of Russian military architecture of the early XVIII century in the Arkhangelsk region.
Sergey Prokopenko said: “We got acquanted with the best museum practices in the field of exhibiting fortification objects, which our students will be able to study within the framework of the discipline “Museum Studies”.
