The low-invasive method of renal cancer treatment developed by a team of researchers from the Institute of Medicine of Belgorod State University proves to be more effective than laparoscopy.
As things stand, renal cancer is the leader in terms of growth among oncological urological pathologies, and practically the only option for its treatment is tumor resection. As surgeons note, the least traumatic endoscopic access to the kidney is increasingly used for this purpose. However, when applying this method for treating patients with complex tumors, there is a high risk of post-surgery complications.
The scientists of the NRU BSU have proposed a new method of surgical treatment aimed at minimizing the injury at the stage of accessing the kidney while preserving the advantages of open surgery and reducing the risk of complications. Unlike laparoscopy, it allows to reduce the volume of blood loss during surgery and reduce the incidence of post-surgery complications.
“The idea behind our invention is to minimize surgical injury at the access phase while maintaining the advantages of open surgery. It is realized based on the analysis of the vascular anatomy of the kidney. When compared to laparoscopy, minimal access can reduce the time of renal ischemia by up to 3.1 times, reduce the volume of blood loss by 2.7 times and reduce the incidence of post-surgery complications by 2.3 times with comparable rates of pain in the post-surgery period”, – said in an interview with the RIA Novosti newswire Sergey Shkodkin, professor of the Department of Hospital Surgery of the NRU BSU.
Minimal access becomes possible after the removal of the tenth rib. The length of the incision during the operation is only about 10 centimeters, which, however, provides the surgeons with freedom of manipulation.
To date, specialists have successfully applied the developed method to treat 152 patients with renal cell cancer at the Belgorod Regional Clinical Hospital of St. Joasaph.
