The team of the Surgery science club of the BelSU Medical Institute took second place in the academic competition for medical students, dedicated to the 220th anniversary of Kazan Federal University.
Fourteen teams from different regions of Russia competed in the two-day long academic Olympiad. On the first day, medical students demonstrated their skills in providing emergency care; the second day was devoted to their skills and talents in surgery.
According to BelSU team captain Nikita Popov, the first part of the competition required to provide first aid to victims in the mock emergency zone following the mass casualty triage algorithm Simple Triage Algorithm and Rapid Treatment (START). Moving further through the challenge track, the participants were to provide first medical aid, employing their knowledge in conducting advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation, nursing manipulations, tracheal intubation, the ABCDE examination algorithm and baby delivering.
This day also featured contests on theoretical knowledge on gynaecology and emergency care in cardiology.
The second day was no less eventful. Students participated in surgical competitions in micro-, cardio-, plastic, abdominal and minimally invasive surgery, as well as traumatology. Each team member demonstrated the level of competence, performing an operation on cadaver material.
BelSU team showed the best results, taking first places in the competitions on mitral valve plastic surgery, gastric bypass, theory in gynaecology, medical quest, as well as second place in plastic surgery with local tissues, and third – in emergency care in cardiology.
In the overall results, the team of the BelSU Medical Institute was ranked second.
The team of the Surgery science club headed by Nikita Popov consisted of Marina Bondarenko, Maxim Botvinev, Danil Dmitriev, Marina Esina, Maxim Kolenkin, Georgy Pinchuk, Mikhail Rezepin, Nikita Rubanov, and Fedor Khalchenko.
The team’s coaches for the Olympiad were acting director of the BelSU Medical Institute, head of the department of hospital surgery, doctor of medical sciences, Prof. Andrey Yarosh and associate professor of the department of hospital surgery, candidate of medical sciences Igor Gerasimov.
