A meeting at Belgorod National Research University focused on enhancing friendly and strategic relations between Russia and Burkina Faso.
Organized by the Student International Integration Council (SIIC), the event gathered students from various institutes, including those studying international communication and relations at Belgorod National Research University (BelSU). The discussion centred on Burkina Faso’s rebuilding efforts and its geopolitical challenges, particularly in asserting sovereignty against European interests.
Olga Timoshkova, the curator of the student association, highlighted the meaning of Burkina Faso’s name – “country of worthy people” – and Russia’s supportive role in its economic transformation.
Participants explored cooperation opportunities across multiple sectors, including economy, healthcare, and education. SIIC Chairman Alexander Zubarev proposed a program for economic collaboration, focusing on cotton production and agricultural machinery. Sanou Ibrahim Romualdo presented insights into Burkina Faso’s cultural and economic development, noting challenges in its pharmaceutical industry due to external pressures. Nikita Ziegler discussed the emerging Russian House in Burkina Faso and emphasized opportunities for educational collaboration in engineering and energy. Ilbudo Abdul Aziz addressed internal political conflicts and the threat of terrorism from neighbouring Mali and Niger, stressing the importance of Russian support in Burkina Faso’s fight for independence.
Maria Vinichenko, Director of the BelSU VPITIPE Coordination Centre, highlighted the importance of events held according to diplomatic protocols in building connections among future diplomats. Such interactions enhance economic and cultural ties while deepening understanding of global security issues.
“The synergy of ‘worthy people’ and the ‘generous Russian soul’ will strengthen the friendship between our nations. Today’s students recognize the terrorist threats we face and will advocate for peace and security in their future endeavors,” Vinichenko stated.
The discussion was dynamic, covering technology, industry advancements, and the need for practical training in Burkina Faso, particularly addressing its logistical challenges due to lack of coastline. Contributions came from SIIC members Ilya Berestovoy, Sofia Sadovnichenko, Alexander Zubarev, and Sanou Ibrahim Romualdo, along with historians PhD Olga Timoshkova and PhD Margarita Varfolomeeva.
An analytical note was prepared for Rossotrudnichestvo, summing up the highlights of the discussion and proposing collaborative efforts in education and scientific cooperation between Russia and Burkina Faso.
