Every year, on the third Saturday of August, World Homeless Animal Day is observed to raise public awareness about the plight of homeless pets.
In this spirit, caring young volunteers visit the Luchik Nadezhdy City Centre, dedicated to the care and protection of abandoned animals, to provide much-needed attention and support.
The volunteers engage in a variety of tasks, including feeding the animals, replenishing their water bowls, and assisting shelter staff with cleaning the grounds and enclosures. A significant focus is placed on walking the dogs, as for many of these pets, it is their only chance to stretch their legs and interact with people.
In addition to physical care, the volunteers play a crucial role in socializing the animals. They spend time playing with them and teaching basic commands, which greatly enhances the likelihood of these dogs finding loving homes more quickly.
Beyond their direct assistance, the students also organize campaigns to collect food, leashes, collars, and other essential supplies for animal shelters. They conduct educational initiatives both on campus and in the community, raising awareness about the issues surrounding homeless animals and promoting a responsible attitude towards pet ownership.
As the volunteers reflect on their experiences, they emphasize that each visit to the shelter is not only hard work but also filled with positive emotions.
“Seeing how our furry friends joyfully greet us and how even the most timid among them gradually open up – this is what inspires us to continue our efforts,” they share.
