The event celebrated National Geographer’s Day and the 180th anniversary of the Russian Geographical Society.
An interregional meeting of the Lipetsk, Tambov, Voronezh, and Belgorod branches of the Society took place in the birthplace of the renowned Russian scientist and explorer, Pyotr Semenov-Tyan-Shansky, at the Ryazanka Museum-Estate in the Lipetsk Region. This gathering marked the first time that representatives from the Central Federal District branches united to discuss their scientific, cultural, and social activities, as well as future development plans. The Belgorod Region was proudly represented by teachers and a student from the Institute of Earth Sciences at Belgorod National Research University (BelSU).
The first day commenced with the traditional camping experience for geographers, followed by an immersive exploration of the museum-estate dedicated to Pyotr Semenov-Tyan-Shansky. A highlight of the day was the opening of a photo exhibition by Evgeny Mazurin, titled Nature of Russia, which featured captivating stories about the author’s travels through Russia’s wild and unique landscapes, alongside his contributions to the Lipetsk regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society.
Following the exhibition’s inauguration, participants engaged in discussions regarding an expedition to the Tian Shan, presented by participant Alexander Bogdanov. The day’s activities concluded with a thematic walk around the estate, fostering a deeper appreciation for geography.
The second day began with a hike to Gremyachka, another estate once owned by Pyotr Semenov-Tyan-Shansky, located in the Ryazan Region. In the evening, all participants had the opportunity to attend a masterclass on field research equipment conducted by Ekaterina Drozdova, Associate Professor in the Department of Geography, Geoecology, and Life Safety at BelSU, and Head of the Youth Centre of the RGS in Belgorod Region.
“I was truly impressed by the Lipetsk branch’s experience in organising a youth geography school. We will certainly adopt effective methods for promoting geography among schoolchildren and young people. Many of the games and educational materials demonstrated by our colleagues today can be successfully replicated in our region,” shared Drozdova.
As part of the business programme, each regional branch presented its achievements and future plans. Lyubov Belyaeva, Chairperson of the Lipetsk branch of the RGS, outlined prospects for collaboration.
“The Belgorod abatis line, which once stretched across our regions, continues to connect us through its fortresses, serving as an inexhaustible source of inspiration for joint research, hikes, and cultural and educational events,” emphasised Belyaeva.
