Students and staff at Belgorod National Research University gathered at the university’s youth cultural centre to commemorate the Day of Solidarity in the Fight Against Terrorism.
This significant event aimed to honour the memory of those who have fallen victim to terrorist acts and to promote awareness about the ongoing threat of terrorism. The meeting opened with remarks from Elena Malyshkina, Vice-Rector for Educational Work and Youth Policy at Belgorod National Research University (BelSU), who underscored the importance of unity and vigilance in the face of such threats. She emphasized that terrorism can strike unexpectedly, disrupting lives and communities, and called upon everyone to remain alert and proactive in combating this pervasive issue.
The event featured poignant speeches from notable figures, including Police Lieutenant Colonel Denis Sorochinsky, who shared his insights on the challenges faced by law enforcement in preventing terrorism. Military veteran Yuri Kokhovich also spoke, recounting his experiences and reflecting on the significance of remembering those who have suffered due to terrorism.
A particularly moving moment came when Father Roman (Pivnev), rector of the university's house church of Archangel Gabriel, addressed the audience, highlighting the moral implications of terrorism and the need for a collective response. He invited attendees to engage in discussions around these themes at the university’s church, reinforcing the idea that faith and community play crucial roles in overcoming adversity.
The rally paid tribute to the victims of the Beslan tragedy and local terrorist attacks, reminding participants of the profound impact these events have on families and communities. To further honour these memories, a performance by the Art Academy vocal group added a cultural dimension to the event, uplifting spirits while maintaining a sombre respect for the topic at hand.
In addition, an exhibition titled “We Are Against Terrorism!” showcased student artwork that conveyed powerful messages of unity and resilience. This exhibition served as a creative platform for students to express their thoughts and feelings about terrorism, encouraging reflection on the value of life and the strength found in solidarity.
The BelSU Union of Students organized a silent action during the event, which aimed to raise awareness about the lasting impact of terrorism. Participants were invited to reflect on their own experiences and consider how they can contribute to a safer society. Interactive displays allowed attendees to engage with stories of those affected by terrorism, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility.
Overall, the event at BelSU not only commemorated victims but also served as a reminder of the importance of standing together against terror in all its forms. It highlighted the role of education and community engagement in building resilience and promoting peace.
