The Expert Analytical Centre has released the inaugural Ranking of Russian Engineering Universities, designed to evaluate institutions based on their contributions to the country’s new agenda through patenting achievements and publication activity in engineering.
This new ranking, which replaces the previous Inventive Activity Ranking, includes 80 universities across Russia. Belgorod National Research University (BelSU) proudly shares the 11th-12th position with South Ural State University. Additionally, BelSU has made its mark in the top ten universities for patents, being recognized for its significant collaboration with partner organizations that resulted in the implementation of ten patents.
BelSU Rector Evgeniya Karlovskaya expressed her pride in this achievement on her Telegram channel.
“This recognition further confirms that our path toward transformation and expanding partnerships is the right one," she stated. "I want to thank my colleagues for their hard work. I am confident that our potential in engineering sciences and innovative developments is far from fully realized, and we have the foundation to turn growth points into centres of excellence."
The new ranking includes seven additional categories aligned with the Priorities for Scientific and Technological Development of the Russian Federation.
BelSU maintained its presence across all seven priority rankings:
– Priority A: Development of Advanced Digital Technologies – 28th-32nd place (out of 80 universities)
– Priority B: Transition to Clean and Resource-Saving Energy – 27th-32nd place (out of 80 universities)
– Priority C: Transition to Personalized High-Tech Medicine – 44th-48th place (out of 67 universities)
– Priority D: Transition to an Environmentally Friendly Economy – 37th-41st place (out of 78 universities)
– Priority E: Countering Threats to Society, the Economy, and the State – 17th-20th place (out of 72 universities)
– Priority F: Development of Transport, Logistics, and Telecommunication Systems – 17th-19th place (out of 80 universities)
– Priority G: Effective Response of Russian Society to Major Challenges – 32nd place (out of 35 universities).
Olesya Serkina, a specialist in the BelSU Department of Monitoring and Analysis of Development Program Implementation, explained the methodology behind the Ranking of Russian Engineering Universities. The ranking considers universities with scientific publications in at least one of ten engineering fields – including Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Energy, Physics, Ecology, and Materials Science – and requires a minimum of 20 published patents from 2021 to 2024.
According to the ranking compilers, interest in engineering research areas is on the rise. Since 2013, global engineering fields have seen an annual increase in scientific publications by an average of 5%. In Russia, the number of engineering articles surged by 84% between 2015 and 2020, peaking at 94,000 publications in 2020. However, there has been a decline since then, with a nearly 35% drop in engineering publications expected by 2024 compared to the peak in 2020.
