The regional stage of the 24th Moscow (All-Russian) Student Surgical Olympiad, named after Academician Mikhail Perelman, brought together aspiring medical professionals from universities across the country.
The Belgorod National Research University (BelSU) Medical Institute proudly participated in this prestigious event, showcasing exceptional skill and professionalism. Over five intense days of competition, BelSU students demonstrated their theoretical knowledge and practical skills across thirteen surgical disciplines. In addition to performing surgeries, participants engaged in separate theoretical challenges in various fields, including abdominal surgery, traumatology, operative gynaecology, neurosurgery, and cardiovascular surgery. An interactive event known as the Pirogov Table also tested participants’ understanding of anatomy and topography through a series of challenging questions.
After a gruelling competition filled with sleepless nights and rigorous practice, the BelSU team emerged victorious in the “Cardiovascular Surgery” and “Anesthesiology and Resuscitation” categories, securing first place in both. They also earned second place in the “Gynaecology” category and third place in both “Plastic Surgery” and “Obstetrics and Gynaecology.” The team was led by captain Nikita Popov and included students from their second to sixth years of study.
The students expressed heartfelt gratitude to their mentors and coaches: Andrey Yarosh, Director of the Medical Institute, MD, Professor, and Head of the Department of Hospital Surgery; and Igor Gerasimov, the club’s scientific director, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of the Department of Hospital Surgery. Under their dedicated guidance, the team underwent extensive preparation that culminated in this well-deserved success.
“As per tradition, Chakar Amirkhanova, Assistant Professor of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, served as our chaperone for this Olympiad. We are sincerely grateful for their time, professional assistance, valuable recommendations, and moral support during this particularly important and challenging period,”noted team captain Nikita Popov.
