Belgorod National Research University marked the opening of the Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia with a vibrant, costumed flash mob that brought together students from across the globe.
Home to international students from 92 countries, Belgorod National Research University (BelSU) is a living tapestry of cultures. Yet despite their diverse origins, students say they are united by friendship, mutual respect, and a shared love for Russia and its traditions.
Arina Shestakova, youth leader of the BelSU International Friendship Club and a specialist at the university’s International Information Centre, opened the event with a heartfelt address.
“The Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia is more than just a title. It is a call to listen beyond words, to see beauty in difference, and to draw strength from our diversity. Every foreign citizen who comes to study, work, or live in our city becomes part of the vast Russian family – at least for the time they spend here. Every culture is a unique colour in the shared fabric of humanity. Together, we can weave a masterpiece - our present and our future,” said Shestakova.
During the event, international students shared what they love most about Russia and reflected on their experiences interacting with people from different nationalities across the country. More than 30 students from Algeria, Angola, Bolivia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Indonesia, Yemen, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Chad, and Ecuador joined hands in a symbolic circle of unity. The group then performed a dynamic medley of traditional dances from around the world, interwoven with classic Russian round dance movements.
Olga Lyutova, Director of the International Information Centre at the BelSU Department of International Cooperation, emphasized the deeper meaning behind such gatherings. “Today’s students are a generation that came of age in an era of open borders and free movement. Friendship between peoples is not an abstract slogan – it is a daily reality here. It’s classmates from different continents, joint projects, a helping hand while unloading humanitarian aid, conversations over tea, songs sung in many languages – but always from the heart. These are dreams of peace that transcend nationality.”
Students also spoke warmly of life at BelSU and in the city of Belgorod itself. Many noted that, despite occasional weather shifts, they have come to appreciate the region’s distinct seasons: hot, sun-drenched summers and cold, snow-filled winters.
“Russia is a country of great opportunity,” said Francisco Dilson Xavier, a medical student from Angola. “I’ve always admired the education system here. Belgorod State University has a strong reputation, which is why I chose to study medicine. I want to become a surgeon or an ophthalmologist. After graduation, I plan to stay and work in Russia. I also love volleyball, music – I play piano and guitar. And yes, I really enjoy winter and snow!”
