The event was jointly organised by the VPITIPE Coordination Centre, the Patrice Lumumba Centre for Social and Cultural Adaptation and Intercultural Communication at RUDN University and the International Information Centre of the BelSU International Cooperation Department.
Belgorod National Research University (BelSU) brought together experts from Moscow and the Belgorod region for an online roundtable on Intercultural Differences in Business Communication, spotlighting the critical role of cultural awareness in helping international students thrive both on campus and in their future careers.
The event was organised jointly by the Coordination Centre for Sociocultural Adaptation and Intercultural Communication at BelSU, the Centre for Social and Cultural Adaptation and Intercultural Communication at RUDN University (the vector centre of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science), and the BelSU International Information Centre.
Moderated by Margarita Varfolomeeva, Candidate of Historical Sciences and Director of the BelSU Coordination Centre and, the discussion opened with a clear message.
“Effective business communication that takes cultural differences into account is the main tool for adaptation. It is the foundation of mutual respect and successful integration. Today we are sharing what our universities are doing to integrate international students through communication.”
Maria Alimova, First Deputy Director of the RUDN Institute of Russian Language and Director of the Centre for Social and Cultural Adaptation, presented a report on current forms of social and cultural adaptation in Russian higher education. She outlined RUDN’s systematic approach, demonstrating how staged integration helps students navigate both academic and social spheres.
Olga Lyutova, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences and Director of the International Information Centre at BelSU, shared practical tools that help international students overcome language and behavioural barriers in professional settings. Her presentation drew directly from the centre’s hands-on work, highlighting information and advisory support that smooths the transition into business environments.
Tatyana Donnikova, Head of the International Student Services Department at Belgorod State Institute of Arts and Culture, added a creative dimension. Speaking on the cultural code of creativity as a tool for Integration, she argued that creative collaboration fosters both professional skills and the communicative norms vital for career success.
The roundtable closed with a forward-looking discussion on how regional universities and the federal vector centre can align their efforts. Participants agreed to develop unified integration methods tailored to regional specifics. Varfolomeeva also reminded attendees that methodological recommendations approved by the Ministry of Education and Science were available through the Coordination Centre’s social media channels.
