International students at Belgorod State University have shown that sharing your culture is one of the most powerful ways to build a community far from home – turning campus into a vibrant celebration of African identity and togetherness.
For three lively days, Belgorod National Research University (BelSU) became a stage for the sights, sounds, and flavours of Africa, as international students hosted Afrofest – a festival that turned campus into a celebration of cultural pride and cross-continental friendship.
The event was initiated and curated by Natalia Girenko, Assistant Professor in the Department of Russian Language, Professional Speech, and Intercultural Communication, working alongside the BelSU International Information Centre. Designed to give students a platform to share the customs and traditions of their home countries, the festival unfolded across three distinct chapters – sport, music, and food.
It began on the pitch and the court. Friendly football and basketball matches drew players and spectators into a spirited competition that mixed athletic drive with genuine camaraderie. Team games, organisers noted, proved one of the fastest ways to dissolve cultural barriers.
Day two shifted the mood to music. Authentic African melodies filled the venue as performers took to the stage with dances and songs steeped in the atmosphere of their homelands. The performances were more than entertainment – they were a window into the emotional and artistic landscape of the continent, delivered by students eager to share what words alone cannot convey.
The festival closed on the most universal note of all: food. A culinary celebration saw long tables laden with traditional African dishes, fragrant with spices and built from recipes passed down through generations. Guests moved from plate to plate, sampling rich stews, savoury specialities, and sweet treats, discovering that to taste a country's cooking is to begin to understand its culture.
Throughout the three days, Afrofest made one thing clear: international students are not just studying at BelSU – they are shaping its cultural life, building bridges between their homes and their host country, one match, one song, and one meal at a time.
